Westfields Upgrading Gets Boost
By Jim Gainsford

Construction has begun on upgrading and new work at Westfields Sports High School at Fairfield West.
The estimated cost of the worh is $7.3 million.

Approval was recently given to start stage two of the school's renovation worth $4.87 million.
This will include a new administration block, two-storey conecting walkways, a disabled lift, specialist rooms for home science and industrial arts and a new staff room.

Work has already started on a seperate project, the replacement of the school's main hall, which was burnt down two years ago.
The new hall will cost $2.48 million.

The hall will be a training centre for the artistic women's gymnastic squad and will have a weight training section.
Of the hall's cost, $1.29 million comes from the school's insurance fund.
Another $1.2 million was secured after lobbying from Fairfield state MP Joe Tripodi, who was a student at the school.

The Hall is due to be finished by next April.
Work will then begin on the school's $4.87 million upgrade.

Mr Tripodi said Westfields was believed to be only the school in NSW to have the new design.
Mr Tripodi said the school's four main classroom blocks would be completely renovated.

He said this would make it one of the best schools in the state.
The classrooms will be designed to incorporate a new learning concept in school design which allows for learning spaces seperating classrooms from practical areas.

The blocks will be connected by enclosed two-level walkways.

A new administration block and a new car park for teachers will be built.
Stage one of the Westfields upgrade took place in 1996-97 at a cost of $1.9 million.
This included a new performing arts and creative facility, a tiered learning space and an artists' courtyard.

Mr Tripoda said the upgrade would make the school one of the best in the state.
"Westfields is gaining an international reputation for sporting excellence," he said. The school's principal, Phil Tucker, said: "The Westfields Sports community welcomes this excellent support."
Mr Tucker has been invited to Denmark to discuss the achievements of the school at a confrence on internation cooperation in education.

Denmark has decided to build a dedicated sports high school based on Westfields.
