Picture: Wesley Lonergan AS A maths wizard, Marcus Ibaceta, 15, of Mount Pritchard, has a formula for almost everything but what's the formula for success? Marcus, who goes to Westfields Sports High School, said: ``If you work hard you can achieve anything you want.'' Marcus is one of 19 year 9 students in the school's accelerated maths program who recently sat for the School Certificate. Marcus is talented with figures, but when he sat for the mathematics exam last month, he wasn't just another student making up numbers. He scored 99 marks out of 100 and finished the exam ahead of the entire year 10 group and the accelerated program students. The band six achievement comes on the back of 10 periods of maths each week and after countless hours of study outside school. ``I thought I would have gone all right, but not this good,'' Marcus said. ``I've been taught well by dedicated teachers who have built up my exam confidence.'' Marcus found out about his achievement during a senior assembly last Wednesday, before going on to be announced year 9 dux that night. Despite his recent success in the subject, Marcus is still concentrating on his long-term goal the Higher School Certificate. ``I have started doing some HSC work because I will sit for the mathematics exam next year,'' he said. ``Then, in years 11 and 12, I will be doing Extension I and Extension II.'' He says he would like a career in either aerospace engineering or resource economics. ![]() Wednesday 16th December 2009 |
