Head to retire
Westfields Sports High School principal Phil Tucker will officially announce his retirement next month.
Acting principal, Helen Wilson, said that Mr Tucker had recently told the school community of his decision to retire.
Mrs Wilson said Mr Tucker had said he was proud of what the school community had done.
He had thanked the members of the community for their support.
“What a stunning achievement!” Mrs Wilson said.
“The legacy he leaves will go on for a long time.”
In 1991, Mr Tucker pioneered the idea of a selective sports school. This idea is now recognised internationally and gives
students a chance to excel academically while also doing their best at sport.
Under Mr Tucker’s guidance, present and former students have claimed many state, national and international achievements,
and similar models of the school’s sports-based format have been implemented nationally and internationally.
Last Wednesday, Prospect MP Chris Bowen paid tribute in Federal Parliament to Mr Tucker’s outstanding contribution to public
education and Westfields Sports.
