Kristy Dingwall Athlete Kristy Dingwall was honoured to take out last year's Fairfield Advance Junior Sports Star award.

NOW there is even more reason to enter our Junior Sports Star awards.

This year the Fairfield Advance will offer a second annual award, the Young Achiever Award.

As usual, our Junior Sports Star of the year will receive a medal and $1000 prizemoney.

The rest of the year's published nominees then will be in the running for the Young Achiever Award.

We will select a developing sportsperson for the award, with he or she receiving a medal and $500.

The Advance's winner last year, athlete and world record-breaker Kristy Dingwall, 14, of St Johns Park, said it was an honour to win the award.

"It was really great to win. I didn't expect it at all, because there were so many good athletes in the running," she said.

All of the Junior Sports Star winners from 21 Cumberland and Courier Newspapers publications will be in contention for the Cumberland Medal as overall winner.

In the three years of the awards program, we have recognised many outstanding youngsters.

Dani Samuels, our inaugural Cumberland Medal winner in 2005, is in Australia's athletics team for Beijing.

The Junior Sports Star award is open to sportspeople aged between 10 and 16 at the time of nomination who live in the local area.

To enter go to our website, www.fairfield advance.com.au (click on the Junior Sports Star tile).

With thanks
