THEY'RE two former Westfields Sports High School students from Sydney's south-west who took on the world - and won.
Dani Samuels stunned the nation when she won the discus gold medal at the recent world athletic championships in Berlin, while Jarryd Hayne is the ''it'' boy of rugby league, helping to spearhead Parramatta's charge towards a grand final berth.
Samuels, fresh from her European tour, returned home on Friday in time to see her favourite league team, the Eels, defeat the Gold Coast in a knockout semi-final.
''It was great to see,'' said Samuels, 21, who was on the same athletics team as Hayne. ''And it has been good to hear how well Jarryd has been doing. I remember when he dominated the 100-metre sprint and the hurdles, too.''
Samuels admitted she had been surprised by how people have received her victory in one of the most ancient of sports. ''It's been overwhelming,'' she said. ''The sprinters normally get all the attention, so this is great for discus.''
Samuels gets her first taste of celebrity this week with a range of television appearances.
With thanks
