State Records fall at the NSW All Schools
Paul In front of 30,000 spectators at the NSW all Schools Westfields athletes were smashing state records. None of which was more impressive than that of 15 year old year 10 student Paul Stickler. The NSW All Schools had been halved with only the older age groups permitted to compete in conjunction with the Olympic Trials. Paul had to go up an age group to run in a race he had never before contested. Paul normally runs the 100 metres hurdles in which the hurdles are lower and closer together. Paul competed at Stadium Australia in the more difficult 110 metres hurdles race. Easily qualifying for the final with the fastest time, Paul won the final with consummate ease. Paul's time of 14.37 seconds was a new NSW 16 years All Schools record. So fast was Paul's time that he would have won the 17 years race as well (winning time was 14.67 seconds). After the race Paul's comment was ".......that was too easy."
Joven Another State Record went to WAC's Joven Clarke. Joven contesting the 17 years 100 metres won by almost 10 metres in a sizzling personal best of 10.80 seconds. Before his first race Joey had commented "....my hamstrings are tight; I feel like I am going to tear them in the 100 metres". However, with several rubdowns, Joey was never in trouble. This time elevated him to the position as the fourth fastest junior (U20) in the country. Joven had earlier decided in consultaion with coach Max not to contest the Olympic Trials as he felt he would not be competitive. Joey's time would have placed him second in the 'B' final and would have been fast enough to book himself a seat on the plane to the World Juniors as a member of the Australian 4 X 100 metres relay team. Joven also won the 200 metres Schools event winning by almost 15 metres.
Other Gold medal performances went to: Mark Dickson in the 19 years hammer event; Michael Ogilvie in the 17 years hammer event, Sharyn Dickson in the 16 years Shot Put, Fabrice Lapierre in the 17 years Long Jump, Shannon Hill in the 17 years 1500 metres, 3000 metres and 2000 metres steeple chase, Scott Burriss in the 17 years Pole Vault, Corrine Archer in the 16 years 200 metres Hurdles.
