NSW All Schools Final 4 21/9/09
BASKETBALL
Venue: Penrith Valley Regional Sports Ctr.
Summary of games:
GIRLS Basketball:
Semi Final v Redlands (CIS)
Although Redlands put on a good fight, Westfields were clearly the stronger team
And ran out winners by 35 points, and therefore, progressed to the All-Schools final v 2 year winners Xavier from Albury.
Final v Albury (CCC)
The reigning champions were strong and aggressive and took an early lead but a change in tactics saw the Westfields girls edge their way
back into the game.
Albury got out to a 9 point lead early in the 4th quarter and appeared set to pull away but Westfields surged again
with some accurate shooting from 3 point range.
Down 62-59 with seconds remaining, Westfields drew even with a long 3 point bomb. A quick steal and Westfields had the last shot on the
ball but were unsuccessful so the game went into overtime.
The O/T period went all Albury’s way with their experience and maturity showing. Westfields went down 76-69.
A fantastic result for the much younger Westfields team.
BOYS Basketball:
The Westfields boys team met Edmond Rice College (Wollongong) in their semi-final game and got off to an impressive start defensively,
allowing few good shots and running hard on stops.
The Wollongong boys tried hard but were out hustled in most areas.
The score blew out and the Westfields boys booked their passage to the final against a very strong Newington College outfit.
The final started with great intensity and it was Newington, through standout Luke Devlin, who took the lead. Westfields boys began to make
too many simple errors and Newington held a 9 point half time edge.
The third quarter saw the battle continue and again Westfields were unable to capitalise on their opportunities with too many errors. With 4
minutes remaining, and the lead cut to 6, the game was in the balance, but poor shot selection and inaccurate shooting saw the final score
blow out 60-48 to Newington.
