The Sydney-Melbourne rivalry added another dimension to last week-end’s Under 17 and Under 19 state Netball Championship finals at Penrith Sports Stadium. The NSW under 17 squad were looking to claim their second consecutive title and remained undefeated throughout the week of play. Despite being a highly anticipated match, it started slowly, with NSW only up by one goal at quarter time. But excellent play by centre Tegan Ashmore and goal keeper Fiona Themann, saw Victoria still in it at half-time, just 15-12 behind. Heading into the last quarter, NSW were up by four goals, and weathered a late Victorian charge to win 31-23. 
NSW was led brilliantly by Breeana Powell and she and fellow shooter Amy Wild shot with 80-90 per cent accuracy to help the Blues dominate. Defender Madeline Smith was also outstanding, according to Netball NSW spokeswoman Catherine Sneddon. “She was very physical, and really asserted herself,” she said. “She often directed the game from the back of the court and was just brilliant.” With a 1-0 lead in the battle of the States, it was up to Victoria to level the scores and win their fourth straight under 19 title. Both the NSW and Victorian teams had been in outstanding form throughout the week and neither could feel confident of a certain victory. In form...NSW goal attack Amy Wild. - Pix Gary Ramage The match began with inspiring passages of play and Victoria getting the jump on the locals early, before a NSW revival in the second quarter. However, despite the best efforts of their centres, the Blues could not overcome the Victorians, and the visitors ultimately prevailed 37-26. Chelsea, just 17, and Samantha, 18, will juggle HSC studies with the demanding travel schedule of the Commonwealth Bank Netball trophy, starting this week.
