SHE just missed out on the Commonwealth Games team, but Sarah Kallu remains a champion in Fairfield.
Sarah, 15-year-old student from Westfields Sports High School, finished fourth in the 1500m freestyle finals with time of 17min 07.66sec, and 15th in the 200m butterfly at 2:20.98.
"Got to take 26 seconds off the freestyle," she said. "But i'm not disappointed with the 1500m freestyle. I was happy with it.
"With the 200m butterfly, I was happy with that as well.."
Sarah began swimming competitively at the age of 11 years with Smithfield Swimming Association. She still swims under that banner. Sarah is now coached by Bruce Edmunds. She said that being a part of the 2000 Olympic Games trial

had been the highlight of her swimming career, "The atmosphere and just to be among the best athletes was great," Sarah said.

Last month, Sarah took part in the Australian national age championships in New Zealand and won seven medals:

  • two gold medals - 800m freestyle and 400m freestyle.
  • one silver medal - 200m butterfly.
  • four bronze medals - 200m freestyle, 400m individual medley, 200m individual medley and 100m butterfly.

  • Sarah will be swimming at the national age championships in Sydney in less than a week.
