2003 - Update No thesaurus of accolades could begin to describe Sharyn’s past 12 years of dedication to her beloved sport. Her achievements continue to improve each year. The 2002-2003 season was capped off with her first ever State Open Title, becoming only the third WAC female to earn the laurel wreath rego. numbers which she will wear in the new season. A rough estimate of her achievements at Westfields would give her in excess of 80 State medals and 20 National medals. Sharyn was the youngest ever athlete to join our club at the age of 8 and only John Fanella has remained a member longer. Performing P.B.’s in shot and discus during the season, Sharyn’s most impressive performance was 47.63 in discus; a mere 37 cm short of World Junior Standard. For the second year in a row, Sharyn has finished in the top 8 Australians at the National Open Titles. Sharyn represented Westfields Sports High for the last time in 2002 at the Australian Schools/Knockout. However, as a life member, we hope to see Sharyn proudly display our colours for many years to come. 2002 Update This is Sharyn Dickson’s second season in a row competing on part of the the Grand Prix Circuit. So impressive were her performances, she was even granted an Interstate meet (Adelaide). Once again, this year, Sharyn’s list of season performances could have taken up a whole page, so what you see here are only the highlights. What a list of achievements? The ultimate achievement was Sharyn’s National Junior medal; only the fourth female in the history of our club to win one. However, even more significant was Sharyn’s finishing in the final of the Open Shot Put and Discus at the Telstra A National Championships as the 4th and 5th placed Australian respectively. Now a life member of the Westfields Athletics Club, Sharyn has been representing the Club since she was 8 years old. She is emerging as one of this countries finest throwers. Sharyn’ personal best throws are becoming very respectable from an open perspective, with Discus up to 44.50 metres and Shot Put getting very close to the 13 metre mark. As one of our most active club members, Sharyn is an invaluable asset to the club. 1999-2000 saw Sharyn throw personal bests in all three disciplines; shot - 11.57 metres, discus - 43.63 metres and javelin - 38.52 metres. Probably Sharyn's most significant achievement during the season was to be undefeated in NSW in discus at Every State Championship including NSW Combined High Schools, NSW All Schools, NSW Underage and even the NSW Elite Series. At National level, Sharyn won Bronze medals in discus and shot put at the 1999 Australian All Schools and finished in the top eight at the National Junior (under 20) Championships. Sharyn finished the 1999-2000 season with five 'top ten' national rankings in under 16 and under 18. The most outstanding being the 1999 discus and 2000 discus, where she moved from under 16's to under 18's and held on to the number three position during the transition. This is an extraordinary effort because she is competing up an age in under 18's. She is clearly emerging as one of this countries most consistent performers. She already has cemented her position as WAC's best ever all round female thrower 2001 - Update It took a whole page to include just the season highlights of this incredibly talented WAC thrower, and if we had included all her final placings at state and national level; then a second page would have been required. Sharyn Dickson improved her best distances by massive amounts in all three of her throwing disciplines. As a 16 year old in 2000 and a 17 year old in 2001, Sharyn became Nationally ranked with Open women in Shot Put, Discus and Javelin. No WAC thrower has ever achieved this. Sharyn first became a member of WAC when she was 8 years old (the youngest ever athlete to join the club) and 2002 will celebrate her 10th consecutive year as a Club member. If Sharyn decides to renew her membership next year she will be eligible to become our second 'athlete life member'. Under the close support of coach Roger, Sharyn has completed her best ever season. No Westfields female athlete has ever thrown shot, discus and javelin as far as Sharyn. In all three disciplines she is currently ranked in the top 20 Open females in the country, with Shot Put her best coming in at no. 16. Among some of the amazing performances this year were Sharyn's selection in two National Grand Prix's. Sharyn took third place at the Newcastle Grand Prix in Javelin which was a star event including prize money for placegetters. Sharyn competed in a total of three events at the two Grand Prix meets in Newcastle and Canberra, and was the only WAC female to appear at more than one G.P. Among the many honours bestowed to Sharyn over the past twelve months were the Westfields Blue, The Area Blue and the 'Australian Sports Medal'; a Government award presented to persons who have made major contributions and sacrifices to their sport. The latter was a major honour only handed to a select few dozen across the country. With her only chance at World Juniors in the year 2002 (she will be too old in 2004), Sharyn has a tall order in front of her. She is capable of attaining the qualifying marks, however there are many equally talented throwers in the country she will have to beat as there are only two spots on the team. But if there is one trait Sharyn possesses; it is patience. She has been around for ten years already and shows no signs of losing interest or enthusiasm. In her last year at Westfields, Sharyn has played a large part in the development of Westfields to its current status as an elite training centre. She is a true team member and a great asset to the school and club. 2000 Field events are the most difficult events to produce P.B.'s at the right time. Because these events are so explosive, the delivery is executed over a split second and the slightest error of judgement means metres off the performance. Accordingly throwers have to be extremely patient and Sharyn Dickson has just that quality. She has been throwing since she was 8 years old. She entered the National Junior Rankings this season with an outstanding performance at the first NSW Elite Series where she threw 43.63 metres in discus, which is the best throw ever by a WAC athlete. |
