NSW All Schools Championship Final 17/9/09
Football
Westfields 6 v Pymble Ladies College 0
Thursday 17th September 2009
The girls were anticipating this game for some time and were mentally prepared to finish off a great school season of football with a result.
The team line-up was altered slightly without the names of Sam Proctor, Melissa Caceres, Shelby Milton, vanisha Kumar
and Helen Petinos who played limited time after returning from a back injury.
The instructions were simple, keep possession by moving the ball quickly, avoid battles by playing percentage passes, and contain the
opposition when defending for the first 10 minutes to see how Pymble approached the game and what sort of opposition we were up against
as this was our first meeting with the College.
Stephanie Haim was first on the score sheet with a calm finish to put Westfields up 1-0 after 14 minutes.
Pymble looked to threaten out wide with pace but the covering defence of Adrijana Cirjak and Alex Huynh containied most of
the attacks.
Westfields went 2-0 up when Stephanie Haim snuck a low free-kick to the near post which the Pymble keeper could perhaps have done better
with her handling but didn’t quite manage to hold onto. We went into the break 2-0 up.
After conceding to the fact that the quality of football wasn’t great on our behalf, we had to increase the intensity in the second half
with quicker combinations and a faster passing game, attacking space when possible and not dwelling on the ball too long.
The result on the pitch was instant and the style of attacking play was twice the quality. Cayla White finished off on some good
build up play with Lauren Vosota pressuring the back four and quickly regaining possession for the team.
A late substitution into the game saw Helen Petinos come off the bench and make some clever runs between the Pymble two central
defenders and she managed to find herself 1v1 against the Pymble keeper which Helen finished with good composure.
A shift in playing roles saw Adrijana Cirjak then play as our striker and she collected a double for her efforts with some excellent
finishing in front of goals.
Alanna Kennedy had a couple of chances throughout the game and played very solid in midfield as did Candace Sciberras.
Renee Krstanovska and Georgia Rowntree did not have great deal to do in goals but when they were called upon, made some fine
saves. Patricia Charalambous, Madison Burgin and Tiffany Booke were solid for the team in defence.
Our youngest pairing of Rhianna Pollicina and Amy Harrison played with confidence which was pleasing to see against opposition
much older.
Samantha Huynh did well for us in midfield and established herself in a more dominating role when playing in the backline.
There is no doubt that the team will continue to exceed expectations in years to come with an abundance of talent that could not be matched
this year.
Well done and congratulations to all the Westfields girls on an outstanding school season.
