Numbers are looking up: Stephanie, 14 (left) is one of Westfields Sports female footballers following in the path of Heather Garriok (right). Ironically, like Garriok, this includes being brought up in Campbelltown, going to the same primary school, high school and in the same football program at the Australian Institute of Sport.               Picture: Helen Nezdropa
Women on the ball

THE Socceroos weren't the only ones to play football at Melbourne's MCG and win last Thursday.
Local Matildas Heather Garriok and Kylie Ledbrook featured in the curtain-raiser before the main event of Australia v Greece, edging out Mexico 2-1.
Garriok, the women's football coach at Westfields Sports, said she is anticipating an increase in women's soccer
due to the success of the Matildas and the Socceroos.
"In the first half of the game the crowd was coming in so there was 20,000 to 30,000 people there," she said. "They've probably never seen women's soccer before."
Garriok, who is now preparing for the women's World Cup qualifiers in July. said performing before the men's team was a "big thing for the Matildas."
This is why she is encouraging aspiring female
footballers to get involved with the school's program.
The program is growing. It is anticipated the school will have more females joining following the success of the Matildas and the growing opportunities in women's football in Australia and across the globe.
