Harry Kewell, Michael Beauchamp and Jason Culina might just hear the roar of Westfields Sports High School students from Germany with every touch of the ball.

The Fairfield West high school is getting behind it's former students and the Socceroos during the World Cup, which kicks off this week.

School media liaison officer Heather Clarke said the buzz around the school had been steadily growing during the last few weeks.

“We are all very proud that our three boys are going to be there giving it their all,” she said. “It’s one of the most prestigious sporting arenas in the world and we will be backing them all the way. The whole school is barracking for the Socceroos throughout the tournament and we know they will do well.”

Mrs Clarke said the school’s normal strict uniform policy might even be relaxed a little.

“There may be a touch of the green and gold around the place,” she said. “And we also may excuse some bleary eyes and forgotten homework. All the students are very excited and having former students taking part is an honour. It’s something for the kids to aspire to.”

Year 8 students and rising soccer stars Jacob Ott, Bernie Ibini and Daniel Bragg said they would try to watch every match.

“It’s really exciting,” Jacob said. “I’m taping every match and I’ll watch as many as I can. I’ll be cheering for the Socceroos. We proved we could do it when we beat Greece and we’ve beaten Brazil before.”

Bernie said he’d be watching his favourite player, Harry Kewell, very closely. “It’s going to be a great experience for the younger players,” he said. “The World Cup is huge and I can’t wait.”
Daniel said the experience would be good for the younger players. “I’ve been playing since I was nine and I want to play for Australia one day,” he said. “that would be the ultimate.”

Soccer director Trevor Morgan said the World Cup was an exciting time. “This year it’s more exciting than ever because Australia is there,” he said. “Hopefully I won’t get much sleep for the next four weeks. Most of the students normally pick a team because Australia hadn’t made it. Everyone’s talking about the Australian players and getting behind them. The excitement is really building around here because it really means something to have their team in the tournament.”
