TWO former Westfields Sports students have helped the Matildas qualify for next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in China.
Heather Garriock and Kylie Ledbrooke were part of the team that reached the final of the AFC Women’s
Championship in Adelaide, ensuring Australia will be one of the two representatives from the Asian Confederation at the tournament.
Although China defeated the Matildas in a dramatic penalty shoot out 4-2 after the final finished 2-2 all at the end of full
time then extra time, the Matildas 2-0 win against Japan in the semi final on Thursday guaranteed them a berth at the World
Cup.
Heather Garriock played in both games, while Kylie Ledbrooke was a subsitute.
Australian coach Tom Sermanni said although he was disappointed by the result of the final, he was not disheartened by the
performance of the team.
“It was a great learning experience, which will no doubt help these girls immensely down the track,” Sermanni said.
“Despite the result, it was a sensational game between two very evenly matched teams.”
