In the new year, still 15 years old, Aaron began his campaign for the under 18 Multiple Events. In his first ever attempt at the gruelling ten event decathlon, Aaron was brilliant with his score of 4970 points and a silver medal behind WAC's Scott Burriss, and ironically ahead of the Bronze medal performance of WAC's Angelo Vasilopoulos. But Aaron's score was 30 points short of the National Qualifying mark of 5000 points required to contest the Australian Championships. Undeterred, Aaron travelled with Scott and Angelo to Canberra to compete in the Australian Capitol Territory Decathlon Titles. | Personal Bests:

The Titles in Canberra were held over two weeks and the double trip to
Canberra was worth it. All three WAC athletes performed personal best
scores. Aaron added 60 points onto his best score and accordingly
achieved his national qualifier.
At the Nationals, Aaron's back would play up again and he struggled through the ten events to pick up the Bronze medal. Aaron is working hand in hand with Sportswide at Westfields to overcome his injuries, and we hope he will be successful and complete the new season without injuries. Always happy, Aaron adds much spirit to the Westfields Family. 2001 - Update As a 16 year old in 2000, Aaron Warburton won the Bronze medal at the Australian All Schools in the under 20 Decathlon. What an incredible effort it was! Aaron's final score incorporated 8 personal best performances and was one of the WAC highlights of the trip to Adelaide. This slightly built athlete was essentially mixing it with this counties best Junior prospects and was giving them a run for their money. We don't mind saying that back in 1998, Aaron nearly missed the cut off for selection to Westfields, and we are sure glad he made it. What an asset he is to the Westfields Program! His overall performance throughout the season earned him a spot in the Sydney Youth Olympics; initially as a relay team member. Fortunately the organisers decided to run a 'B' 100m race and Aaron took first place, which was a just reward for his Gold medal as a member of the winning relay team. Aaron has made the courageous decision to concentrate on sprinting this year after his current top 10 ranking in the 200 metres. He has set his goals for this year as running sub 22 seconds for the 200 metres and joining WAC's ever growing 10 second club for 100 m. 2002 - Update For most of his final year at Westfields, Aaron had to contend with hamstring problems. It was a devastating blow to the loyal WAC athlete who had made the decision to concentrate on sprinting. But there are times when courage overcomes all obstacles, and Aaron would at times pull out the most amazing performances, despite the fact that his legs wouldn’t allow him to open up completely. The most impressive of which was his brilliant finish in the 200m at the NSW All Schools to take the Bronze medal. Very appreciative of all the work WAC did for Aaron, the Westfields graduate is beginning to return the favour by looking after the club. |
