news Update
Published 27/10/00.

From The Principals Desk.

Looking at the glossy handouts provided by industry to promote vocational education it is great to see how many Westfields students are featured. The TAFE opportunities provided by our school are simply excellent. Mr Blevin, our careers advisor, is always available to discuss these opportunities with students and parents. To showcase the achievements of our students and teachers and to provide information for our community and beyond, the Westfields Sports Website is being significantly expanded. The work of Noel Clarke is greatly appreciated. Congratulations to staff and students involved in the Paralympic Games. Many months of practice and late nights were worth it. We will celebrate the efforts of these people at a later date.
For many years Westfields Sports has been understaffed in terms of the number of executive (Head) teachers. The Department of Education is making the allocation of head teachers fairer and reflective of school size. In this restructuring, our school will gain three additional head teacher positions. This does not mean three additional teachers but rather some period allocations. In discussions with the staff and P & C it has been decided to request the positions of Performing/Creative Arts, Technology and Sport. Significant progress is underway with the rebuilding of the hall and an additional hall in the canteen area. The first hall is due for completion in June 2001.
This week saw the retirement of Mrs Helen Fielder who has been a volunteer at the school for over a decade. This remarkable woman will be known to many as the manager of the school shop - giving up weekends and holidays for years to assist our students and parents. Helen will be sorely missed. Thanks for all your efforts over the years.
Mr Cherry's Learnscape team is working this Sunday. Please come and help if you have the time.

Cricket Selection
Congratulations to Cameron Nupier on his selection in the City U/17 side for consideration for the NSW squad for the Australian U/17 Carnival. Cameron also became the 4th Westfields cricketer to be selected in 1st Grade in the Sydney Cricket Association Grade competition.
In what must be a record, Westfields cricketers supplied no fewer than 19 players to Sydney Grade clubs for the 2000 / 2001 season. Cameron, Hayden Shuttleworth and Nathan Perry were selected by Campbelltown C.C.; Matthew Ballentine, Mitchell Tremain, Anthony Percy, Mark Oliver, Sajiv De Silva, Matthew Williams, Paul West, Mitchell Williams and Ben Dunn are with Liverpool C.C; Kurt Minard, Scott Jamieson, Gavin Atkin, Leigh Cornell and Dean Hayes were selected by Bankstown C.C whilst Wayne Stewart will represent Penrith C.C and Chris Harper will represent Parramatta C.C.
Westfields defence of the Davidson Shield will commence with a quarter final match in November against Elderslie High for a place in next years finals series. Our Omnicon Cup campaign continues with a quarter final win by forfeit over Armidale school. We now meet St Gregoreys in November for the chance to represent NSW at the Australian Carnival in Adelaide. Our Mark Waugh Shield team are looking to make it 5 in a row as they kick off their defence of this trophy with a match against Lumea High. Good luck boys!

National School Counselling Week
This has just passed. School counsellors are experienced teachers with post - graduate training in schools counselling. They complement and enhance the work of teachers by strengthening schools' students welfare provisions and providing counselling and psychological assessments of students with specific needs. Their collaboration with teachers in classrooms is designed to improve student learning outcomes.
Mr Robert Brown and Mr John Hegarty are the 2 counsellors at Westfields and one of them is usually at the school. Appointments can be made through the counsellor or the Front Office.
There are also numerous counselling and assorted resources in the community. For example: anyone can ring 9794 1739 between 1pm and 5pm Monday to Friday to access free counselling and other Community
Health Centre personnel.

Narrow Defeat for Netballers
Congratulations to Aimee Zuzul, Kaiya Donovan, Michelle Minchiello, Aimee Palmer, Jade Webster, Jenna Daves, Stacey Burton, Rebecca Ireland, Karlie Friend, Crystal Hughes, Sam Savva and Natasha McKay who represented Westfields during the holidays at the Australasian Schools Netball Championships in Melbourne. A loss to Trinity College (SA) set the girls up for some tough matches against Wesley College (Vic), Corey Baptist Grammer (Vic) and Blackwood (Netball school - SA) but the girls fought hard and were ranked first for the finals playoff.
With Natasha McKay on crutches, the girls managed to defeat Ballarat 20 - 15. All the hard work, icing of injuries and lack of shopping had paid off! The girls met St Pauls (Vic) in the finals with a nail biting match that saw us lead 12 - 10 at half time but even with the magnificent intercepts by Kaiya and the extra time that the match went into, we were narrowly defeated 30 - 31. Congratulations girls on a magnificent effort and achievement. Watch out next year!

Dance Steps
Stacey Welnert, Dinora Marquez, Virginia Marquez, Amanda Vinkovic, Talla Parmenter and Tim Marinik of Year 8 had a fabulous time last week when they attended a 1 day regional dance workshop at the Sydney Dance Company. The students had the opportunity to work with professional choreographers and we look forward to their performances on future assemblies!
