From the Principal's Desk

Many hundreds of parents took advantage of Parent-Teacher Evenings during the last two weeks of Term 2. In addition, very successful subject selection presentations allowed Years 8 and 10 students to make decisions for both School Certificate Courses and Higher School Certificate. Our timetabler, Mr Carter, is currently working on the range of courses to be offered.

With the onset of colder weather this term, some parents have been less than safe with parking outside the school and encouraging their children to cross the road away from the protection of the school crossing. This is such a dangerous and wrong practice. Please support the crossing supervisor for the safety of all.

Senior students are reminded that there is no available parking space within the school grounds. When parking cars in the local area, students and parents are reminded to be sensitive to the needs of local residents. Do not block driveways or park on footpaths.

Thank you to parents who support our school uniform by sending students to school properly attired. School jumpers, blazer and wet-weather jackets are available and appropriate at this colder time of the year.

At this time last year, the school introduced a new SMS system to advise parents of late or absent students. The improvement in punctuality and attendance has been marked. However, of concern is the number of students still arriving late and missing first classes. With an 8:10 am start for seniors, it must be a priority to arrive on time.

HSC students will be preparing for their Trial exams, commencing in week 4. Those students undertaking courses with practical components will be required to submit final works from August on. Students in Performing Arts courses also commence presenting their HSC items in August.

Saturday School classes commenced last week. Parents are reminded that acceleration and remedial work is available. Applications are available from Mr Meyer. After-school Maths tutorials are available, as is music coaching.

It was my pleasure to attend Regional Dance last term and witness the outstanding achievements of our students. The beautiful performances of our students earned three places in the State Dance Festival program.

Congratulations to Dani Samuels on her selection to represent Oceania in the Athletics World Cup, to be held in Athens in September. This is a significant first for a Westfields student in Open International Competition. Dani will warm up in the World Juniors Competition in Beijing in August.

Christie Chamberlain and Dale Jenner have recently returned from their international competition in Greece. Both athletes gained fourth place in their events at the World Schools Games.
