From the Principal's desk.
Welcome back to a very busy and important time in which we build upon the hard work carried out in Term I. Years 11 and 12 have completed their half-yearly examinations and are receiving feedback on their performances.
The annual celebration of Anzac Day was held on the last Wednesday of Term and I must congratulate the History students and staff for a memorable ceremony. Our five returned servicemen from the Fairfield, Canley Heights and Smithfield RSL Sub-Branches were greatly impressed and appreciative. The applause for our guests from the junior assembly was both spontaneous and wonderful.
Robert Fimmano gave an outstanding oration at the Canley Heights RSL Anzac Day ceremony and along with Mr Cherry proudly represented our school. I attended the ceremony at Smithfield RSL along with our captains Chloe Basan and Jeffrey Skinner, Samantha Canhao and Piper Scott Allan. Samantha and Scott also attended the Commemoration Sunday service as well.
Daniel Bragg and Ben Smith organized a ceremony on the Year 7 assembly to express the Westfields Sports community’s appreciation of the twenty years dedicated service of Sandra Vale as a volunteer, assistant and canteen manager. The kind words, flowers, gift and thunderous applause said it all. Thanks Mrs Vale.
The Annual Athletics Presentation Evening was held at St Johns Park Bowling Club. Over 220 students, parents, staff and guests celebrated the efforts, achievement and excellence of our athletes. Guests, and they were highly impressed included –
• Brazilian Ambassador and Vice Consul
• Honourable Joseph Tripodi, MLA – Fairfield, Minister for Housing
• Chris Bowen – MHR Prospect
• Alan Jones - AO Broadcaster
• Trevor Fletcher – NSW Deputy Director –General of Education
• Kim Fillingham – Regional Director of Education
• Hedley Mooney – School Education Director – Fairfield
• Olympians – Joshua Ross, Tamsyn Lewis, Karyn DiMarco – former student.
What a night – the athletes, Jenna Cullen’s National Anthem, the dancers and the Westfields’ Haka – fantastic. Acknowledgement was made on this evening on the exceptional contribution of Mr Dan Suchy and Mrs Marion Dumbrell. The Adhemar Ferreira da Silva Scholarship was awarded to Dani Samuels who won the Open Womens Shot Put at the age of 17 years – an awesome achievement.
Our thanks must go to Chris Bowen MHR for bringing to the school John Coates (Head of the Australian Olympic Committee) and Michael Knight (Olympics Minister). Our guests spent several hours touring the school and talking to students and staff. Our visitors were greatly impressed. Thanks Chris.
John and Michael presented a plaque to parent Mr Andy McGrath in recognition of his gift to our school of a spectacularly refurbished 42-seater bus, which is available for all school activities. Thanks Mr McGrath.
