From the Principal's Desk
Year 12 has completed the Trial Higher School Certificate and there is ample time to build upon successes and address areas of concern. It is important to remember that lunchtime, after school and Saturday morning tutorials are available. If parents have concern about their daughter or son, our school counsellor, Mr Rob Brown, is available for assistance.
Year 11 will be preparing for their final exams and should be ensuring that assignments and tests are attempted with the best possible application. It is disappointing to note that a small number of students will not satisfy requirements for the successful completion of the Preliminary Certificate and therefore will not be eligible for the 2006 Higher School Certificate. The reasons for student difficulties include lack of application, incorrect subject selection, absence and lateness.
Thank you for supporting our SMS initiative to further improve attendance and punctuality patterns.
A number of learning difficulties have their origin in poor reading. There are lunchtime reading tutorials available – give Ms Capadonna a call on 9604 3333. Ms Capadonna has indicated her willingness to conduct a workshop on Saturday mornings to assist parents in helping their children to learn.
The refurbishment of the Industrial Arts block is underway and students are constantly reminded to take care when moving around school. Emergency evacuation procedures were practised and while the operation proceeded smoothly there are refinements needed. Please let our Deputy Principal, Mr Cherry, know if you have any ideas.
I have been authorised to form two panels to carry out the merit selection process for – Head Teacher Administration and Head Teacher Teaching and Learning. The ‘Administration’ panel will be convened by Mr Cherry and the ‘Teaching and Learning’ panel by Mrs Wilson.
The Annual Report has been printed by the Department of Education and Training and is enclosed in the copy of Westnews. This report illustrates a wonderful mix of effort, achievement and excellence by members of the Westfields Sports community.
Congratulations to the Student Representative Council (SRC) for a hugely successful Jeans for Genes day, which raised over $2,000 but more importantly displayed care, and concern for others. A big thank you to all our students.
Westfields Sports enjoyed a special visit from four Wallabies to promote the Bledisloe Cup. Good luck to Matt Giteau, Jeremy Paul, Clyde Rathbone and Mark Chisholm.
