At the request of the Department of Education and Training, I have spent four days assisting   Hamilton Road
another government school review its operations and plan for an even more successful future. I travelled   Fairfield West NSW
nearly 1000 kms and spent long days in completing this task. This is the second time that I have been   PH: 9604 3333
requested to carry out such a task. I mention this because it is important that the Westfields Sports   Medical Centre 9604 3122
community know how much support is given to other schools in NSW, Australia, Europe, Asia and   Gymnastics Hall 9604 3773
Oceania by our school. Further proof of our world wide reputation is found in Students from Asia and   Sports Stadium 9604 9361
Oceania flying to Sydney to trial for places at our school.   Fax: 9725 4898
It was very disappointing to have the head of a local bus company personally deliver a bus to   EMAIL
the front of the school to show me the disgusting state in which our students had left the vehicle. It was   info@westfieldsports.nsw.edu.au
absolutely filthy with food products, which had obviously been thrown. This unacceptable behaviour had   Website
occurred previously despite warnings by senior staff members. The company threatened to cancel the   www.westfieldsports.nsw.edu.au
special services provided for Westfields students. Less of these services would mean lengthy delays in
getting home for many students. It was my decision to take action against the students who misbehaved.   Calendar
Further action will be taken with regard to students who misbehave. A bus pass is a privilege dependant
upon satisfactory and safe behaviour upon public transport.   9-13/9/02
I am very keen to know if any parents of Westfields Students served in the Vietnam Conflict.   Year 10
There are scholarships available to support children of veterans and I would like to assist with any   Yearly
applications. Please let me know.   Assessment/Exams
Thank you to the library staff for supporting Book Week so enthusiastically and to students for
collecting the Telegraph Free Book Tokens. It is great to see so many students in Years 7 & 8 making   16-27/9/02
extensive use of the reading card. Reading is a necessary preparation for academic success.   Year 11
The editor of the Fairfield Champion Jeff McGill was a welcome visitor to the Senior assembly.   Yearly Exams
Mr McGill came to present Certificates of Merit to the Year 10 and 11 students who acted as journalists
and photographers for the “Driving With Attitude” supplement in the Champion.   25-09-2002
Six Year 11 students have indicated interest in pursuing the Distinction courses offered by the   P & C Meeting
Board of Studies through its external university research. Our students were eligible because they are
participating in our successful accelerated Mathematics courses, which will see them sitting for the 2002   14-18/10/02
HSC Mathematics in Year 11.   Year 7/8/9
Year 12 Major Works are now due and our best wishes go to the many students involved.   Yearly Assessment
It was very pleasing this week to be invited to the State Dance Festival at the Seymour Theatre
where two Westfields Sports items will be on display.
It is a sure sign of our increasing international success that more and more of our students will be   27-09-2002
selected for testing by ASDA (the Australian Sports Drug Agency). The testing is a very important part of   Last Day
the necessary campaign against performance enhancing drugs. All students sign as a condition of entry,   Term 3
that they will not use such drugs. Four sportspersons from Gymnastics and Track and Field have been
tested to date.   25-09-2002
Staff have spent time going over the draft plans for the $6.3 million refurbishment program for the   P & C Meeting
school. Pages of suggestions have been provided for consideration by the architects. Their reply is awaited.
Following visits to other schools I have requested the Department of Education and Training to provide a
tasteful fence (possibly green 1.8-2.0 metres) for the front and rear of the school. While there is no pressing
need for this fence, evidence tends to suggest that such a fence assists in improving security. I would   14-10-2002
welcome your comment.   First day Term 4
Appreciation must be expressed to Mrs Kenny, Director of Sport for her management of the   Staff & Students
applications for placement at Westfields Sports in 2003. Her leadership of a team of coaches and teachers
both from within and outside the school has been very effective in dealing with an onerous task. Many
months of painstaking effort have gone into ensuring the selection process is carried out effectively. Offers
of placement are now being made.
