AIM
The aim of the PD/H/PE Faculty is to develop students capacity to entice personal health and well being, enjoy an active lifestyle, maximise movement potential and advocate lifelong health and physical activity.
OBJECTIVES
Knowledge, Understanding, Skills, Values and Attitudes:

PD/H/PE 2009
Year 7
Skill groups included in the new school term include practical work on:
Dance; Kick, Pass, Run; Cunning Running; Gym; Skills; Run, Jump, Throw; Strike/Field. In theory the students will examine the transition
from junior to high school and the issues that may affect them at this time.
There will be an assignment on the theme” Who am I?” set during term 1, and later in term 2 an assignment on nutrition and physical activity.
There will be an opportunity for students to watch, in school, a play about ‘bullying’ performed by the excellent production team
“Brainstorm Productions”. This is scheduled for Friday 13th March and will cost students $5.00
Year 8
Students commence year 8 with the first practical activity in a 6 unit rotation which changes approximately every 7 weeks.
The activities are Invasion Games; Skills in Action; Move, Explore, Compose; recreation; Strike/Fielding; Gym. In theory, students will
complete the unit on Growth and Development and then look at the issue drugs and its effect in society. There will be opportunities for
students to learn from a variety of sources including video/DVD productions during this topic. If parents have questions regarding the
content that is scheduled to be shown at this time please do not hesitate to contact the school for further information.
There will be an opportunity next term for students to watch in school a play about ‘Relationships’ performed by the excellent production
team “Brainstorm Productions”. This is scheduled for Monday 6th July and will cost students $5.00
There will be a half year exam in class time at the beginning of term 2.
Year 9
The new year 9 students commence a theory topic called “This is your Life” which looks at the issues facing young students at this age and
the decisions that they may be faced with. There will be a variety of teaching resources used including video/DVD material to support the
module. If parents require more information regarding this material, please do not hesitate to contact the school.
Practical work includes a rotation involving activities such as Net games; Athletics; Gym; Team games and ‘Getting Active’
Assessment is in the form of a research task which will be conducted towards the end of term 1.
Year 9 –
Physical Activity and Sport Studies
The introduction to this course starts with the topic “Foundations of Physical Activity – Nutrition and Physical Activity”. The students
will study the importance of nutrition for health and physical activity as well as nutritional planning for activity and weight management.
There will be an assignment and class test to assess this topic. Later in term 2 students will learn about systems of the body and the
effect of exercise on the heart and lungs. Practically, students will look at aspects of coaching and ‘world games’ and will have the
opportunity to select an activity to deliver a short lesson to the group.
An incursion has been booked for the students to experience the game of wheelchair basketball. This will be 24th March.
Year 10
The new year 10 students start the second year of their School Certificate PD/H/PE course by studying the popular topic “The Party”. This
unit looks at the social issues and risk factors that face the 15 – 16 year old in the social setting. There will be a variety of teaching
resources used including video/DVD material to support the module.

In practical lessons, classes look at the role of ‘playing in a team’. This involves aspects of attack and defence and the responsibilities
of each within the team. Later in term 1, students will have the opportunity and be assessed in the ability to create and design sequences
of movement with or without music.
There will be an opportunity next term for students to watch in school a play about ‘Relationships’ performed by the excellent production
team “Brainstorm Productions”. This is scheduled for Thursday 4th June and will cost students $5.00.
Year 10 –
Physical Activity and Sport Studies
At the start of the year students will work on an “Event Management” topic. This unit focuses on developing experience in carnival
organisation. Students will gain experiencing planning, conducting and evaluating the school swimming carnival and explore the range of
different formats for competition through active participation. There will be an opportunity to attend the school swimming carnival to help
with the organisation. Assessment will be in the form of an assignment due week 3.
Students then commence a unit on coaching and explore the roles and responsibilities associated with coaching. There will be an opportunity
for the students to attend and watch an elite club/association during a coaching session. Assessment of this will be in the form of a class
test which will be at the end of term 1.
Year 11 – PDHPE
Students who have chosen to follow this course will start year 11 with a short module entitled – “ The Meanings of Health and Physical
Activity”. This examines the concept of health and physical activity and explores how people’s view of each differs according to their
experiences and backgrounds.
In Term 1 2009, students will follow the compulsory module “Better Health for Individuals” that examines the nature of personal health, the
perceptions students have of their own health and the degree of control they have over their health. Topics such as nutrition, physical
activity, drug use and relationships will be investigated and an action plan designed to maintain and/or modify selected actions in an
effort to optimise their own health. Assessment will be in the form of an assignment which will need to be completed by week 7.
Students will then be required to undergo the RLSSA ‘Senior First Aid’ course which will give the students valuable accreditation to put to
use in the community.
Half Year exams will be Term 2 weeks 1+2.
Year 11 SLR
Sport, Leisure and Recreation enable Years 11 &12 students to build upon learning achieved throughout the K – 10 PDHPE Syllabus. SLR is
specifically designed to focus on the aspects of learning that relate closely to participation in sport and physical activity.
The first module that year 11 students will take part in is ‘Social Perspectives’. As a result of studying this module students will learn
to analyse the major issues affecting sport in Australia. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a range of popular
physical activities in Australian society. Assessment will be in the form of a research task and will need to handed in week 7.
Practically, students will look at coaching themes and responsibilities and some students will have the opportunity to help deliver some
sporting activities to year 5 students from Fairfield West public school during term 1.
Half yearly exams are Term 2 weeks 1+2.
Year 12 – PDHPE Term 4 2008 – Term 3 2009
Year 11 roll into year 12 and will commence the HSC course with the ‘Sport Medicine’ topic. This option is concerned with the specific
issues of prevention, assessment, management of and recovery from sports injury. In this module, students examine how the extent and
intensity of sports participation relates to the incidence of sports injuries. They explore the range of technical and scientific
approaches for maintaining the wellbeing of athletes. Assessment will be a combination of practical strapping and a theory paper.
Core 1 “Health Priorities in Australia” will commence around week 6 with an assignment due to be completed during the summer break. This
compulsory module examines the health status of Australians and investigates, in depth, the current health priority areas in Australia.
Students identify and justify the choice of priority areas and examine the roles that health promotion and health services play in
achieving better health for all Australians. Core 2 will also commence towards the end of term 1. This is module looks at factors that
affect performance as students explore the physiological and psychological bases of performance.
Half year exams will be term 1, weeks 10+11.
Year 12 – SLR
Year 11 roll into year 12 and after the completion of modified games will commence a block of Fitness. In practical activities, work will
correspond to the theory component. Assessment will be the completion of the fitness booklet and will be handed in just before the year 12
half year exams.
